Who doesn't love a good candle? You use candles to scent your home or office, to unwind or even to take away smells of food and cigar or cigarette smoke. But have you thought of trying your hand at making your own candles? It's super easy and fun for the whole family. There are easy accessible kits at both your local department and craft stores, see this episode here , where I used a candle making kit from Walmart! With kits you can not control the type of wax you have but you can definitely get the wax you need and that I personally prefer from a craft section from the discount department stores or from the craft store online or in store. First, you need soy wax, eight ounce candle tins, candle wicks, color, fragrance, glue dots or a glue gun and glue sticks ( I prefer the latter )...all these items are very affordable. Once you have everything you need, you're going to measure out one pound which is about sixteen ounces. This will give you three 8 ounce candles. The math...
With any and everything we do in life, as time goes on we learn to grow, evolve and perfect the flow of our lives and in my case it has been my maturity in soap making. Some may think all of my soaps are perfect all the time and I am ahead of most in my craft because I started out making hot process soap. Be that as it may, no one is perfect and sometimes we miss the ball and in the video below that's just what happened to me!
On this day, Valentine's Day 2019 to be exact, I attempted to make two soaps, one Japanese Cherry Blossom and Magnolia Blossom with fragrance oils purchased from Indigo Fragrance. For both of the soaps, everything started out as usual and as time went on, those of you that are soap makers can attest to this, something drastically changed. At first, I thought it may have been the fragrance seizing the soap and in some instances it was, but I soon realized after I switched my recipe and used the Magnolia Blossom fragrance again, I had entirely too high of an amount of hard oils in my recipe.
When trying to accomplish intricate designs a slow moving soap is essential with certain fragrances and essential oils. Although, highly annoyed and frustrated I took this as a learning experience and have kept the new recipe as my base and have had great success since.
Moral of the story...read reviews, test your fragrances/essential oils, and do what works for you; but remain open to learn and make mistakes. That is indeed, the only way we continuously grow!Signing Off
